2012 was a year of opposites for me. Where as 2011 ended on a low note (with me losing my job at BC Hydro), 2012 has ended on high notes. Let’s start at the beginning.
2012 started pretty much as 2011 ended, terribly. Job interview after job interview ended with disappointment until eventually the opportunities just stopped coming. These frustrations, coupled with the financial issues that accompany being unemployed, began spilling into my relationship (but I won’t get into that). Thankfully, to start the year, I had Springboard and Sean William Designs to keep me distracted. Both started well, but only one has lasted the year (more on that later).
As 2012 progressed, my fortunes began to change… Slowly. Springboard’s crowdfunding project was successful and Sean William Designs started picking up some bigger projects. In March I picked up the biggest project of my career thus far, a proof of concept that required me to design and build (with the help of a great team) 3 websites and an app, all of which needed to communicate with each other. Oh and we had to deliver this in 5 weeks. We did.
This project led to a huge change of fortune in my year. As a result of the work we did, the organization created a new division for Digital Business solutions and hired me as the Web Designer. This, on top of additional work for Sean William Designs, kept me very busy throughout the summer. It also changed my perspective on what I could accomplish in 2012.
As the summer began to wind down, things took a dramatic turn for the better as my girlfriend and I put a down payment on our first condo (we move in in March).
The last few months of 2012 have gone by in a blur of planning and shopping for the new place, planning and preparing for 2013 at TU, and completing work for more and more clients for Sean William Designs.
The only regret I have of 2012 is the relative failure of Springboard (in its current guise), however new plans for 2013 will hopefully turn that around.
2011 ended poorly which led to a poor start to 2012; 2012 is has ended strong and 2013 should start even stronger. I am looking forward to the challenges of the year.
